One of the greatest accomplishments a person can have is earning their Phlebotomy Certification. Many people who obtain this certification move on to having successful jobs and it is a stepping stone to furthering their career. Many people work as Phlebotomist to earn money while they are in school for other medical related fields. The reason for this being that a Phlebotomy Certification is so easy to get.
There is a process in which is required for a person to receive their certification. Many people think that all this is just attending and passing a class but this is not true. To become a phlebotomist a person needs to first apply for a program which usually runs for about five months or less. The class usually meets one night a week for about three hours at a time.
Once in the program students will need to not only attend lecture classes but lab classes. In those lab classes students will practice withdrawing blood on other students in the class. Along with this type of practice students are required to attend a two week clinical. The student will work in a doctor's office, hospital, nursing home, or a lab forty hours each week for those two weeks. Only one rotation is required. During this clinical, students will be required to perform a certain number of successful blood withdrawals under supervision on a licensed phlebotomist. The clinical is usually during the last month of schooling once you have shown success in the class room and lab.
After completion of all classroom, lab, and clinical hours with a passing score of a C or higher you will get your certification for completing the school course. Passing of the phlebotomy certification course doesn't mean that you are a Certified Phlebotomist. To become at certified phlebotomist you are then required to take the Phlebotomy Certification Test. The test is different in each state because requirements are different. The test is not offered by the school in which the phlebotomy course was taken at. The test has a fee from between $60 and $150 depending on which state you are becoming certified in. With each state having different phlebotomy requirements the test will be needed to be taken in another state if a person was to relocate.
Once passing the Phlebotomy Certification Test you will receive a card with your name stating that you are now a certified phlebotomist. This card will be needed when applying for jobs so that you can show your credentials. Each year after taking the test you will need to take continuing credit courses to keep your certification up to date. This is required in most state. You will receive information on renewing your certification prior to the expiration date on the card. After completing the continuing credit courses you will receive a new car with a new date of expiration on it. It is important not to lose this card because it takes a while to receive a new one in the mail.
The way to become a phlebotomist is by taking the phlebotomy test and attending a certification course.
